Prime Minister Kishida Fumio will visit the US and hold talks with President Joe Biden before both of them leave office?

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is finalizing plans to visit the United States in late September to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting and hold a summit with President Joe Biden.

On August 17, the Yomiuri newspaper reported that outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is finalizing plans to visit the US in late September to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting and possibly hold a summit with President Joe Biden.

The visit could last for several days, starting on September 22, Yomiuri quoted multiple government sources as saying.

Mr. Kishida announced his withdrawal from the race for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on August 14, meaning he will step down as Prime Minister when his term as party leader ends at the end of September.

However, the LDP has not yet set a date for the election of a new leader. According to the Yomiuri, the event could take place as early as September 20, in which case Mr. Kishida could address the UN General Assembly after the Japanese parliament , where the LDP has a majority of seats, has chosen his replacement as the new Japanese Prime Minister.

When asked to comment on the information, Japan's Foreign Ministry said "no decision has been made yet".

Mr. Kishida was born into a political family in Shibuya, Tokyo, but lived in Hiroshima. His grandfather Kishida Masaki and father Kishida Fumitake were both members of the House of Representatives.

He was appointed as Vice Minister in charge of construction in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Obuchi Keizo and Mori Yoshiro. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro, he served as Senior Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

When Shinzo Abe took office in 2006-2007, Kishida was appointed minister in charge of Okinawa and Northern Territories affairs, and then served as foreign minister when Abe resumed his role as prime minister in 2012.

Mr. Kishida became Japan's longest-serving foreign minister, leading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 4 years and 7 months under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He was later selected as defense minister and chairman of the LDP's policy research council.

In October 2021, Mr. Kishida Fumio won convincingly against his opponent Taro Kono in the race for the Prime Minister position and succeeded Mr. Yoshihide Suga to become the next Prime Minister of Japan.
