For a long time, many people have believed that going to bed before 10pm is a good habit that helps keep the body healthy and the mind clear.
However, a study published in the European Heart Journal gave a completely surprising result: the ideal time to go to bed to protect cardiovascular health is from 10pm to 10:59pm.
Sleeping too early or too late is bad for the heart.
This study was conducted by British scientists on more than 88,000 people aged 43 to 79. They wore sleep tracking devices continuously for many years, while also providing detailed information about their lifestyle, living habits and health status.

After 6 years of follow-up, more than 3,000 people (equivalent to 3.6%) had cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure or ischemia. When comparing the groups according to the time of going to bed, the results surprised many people:
- People who go to bed after 24 hours have a 25% higher risk of heart disease.
- The group that slept before 10 p.m. was no better, with a 24% higher risk.
- People who sleep between 11pm and 12am have a 12% higher risk than the "golden" group, which is the group that sleeps between 10pm and 10:59pm.
So, it is not true that sleeping early is good. Going to bed too early or too late will disrupt the body's biological rhythm, the "clock" that controls natural human activities, including heart rate and blood pressure.
Dr. David Plans, lead author of the study at the University of Exeter (UK), said: "When the biological clock is disrupted, organs in the body, especially the heart, will have to operate in inappropriate conditions, easily leading to disorders and long-term damage."
Why is sleep so important?
According to sleep expert Abhinav Singh, Director of the Indiana Sleep Center (USA), sleep is not only a time to rest but also a natural recovery process of the body.
“During deep sleep, heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate all decrease. This is the time when the heart rests and recovers after a day of continuous work,” he said.
If sleep is interrupted or of poor quality, the body will not have time to recover, gradually causing problems such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, obesity, diabetes, all of which are "enemies" of the cardiovascular system.
Not only the time of going to bed, but also the quality of sleep is an important factor that cannot be ignored. A sleep on time, deep enough and regular every night will help the cardiovascular system to be "recharged", improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of stroke.
Sleep on time – small habit, big benefits
Experts recommend that adults should go to bed between 10pm and 10:59pm, maintaining this habit regularly every day. Before going to bed, you should:
- Avoid using phone or computer for at least 30 minutes.
- Limit drinking coffee, alcohol, beer or eating too much.
- Keep the bedroom quiet, cool and away from strong light.
Quality sleep not only helps restore energy but is also a “natural medicine” for the heart. By maintaining the habit of sleeping on time, we can prevent a series of dangerous diseases without any medicine.
