Toyota Century - the luxury limousine for the Japanese elite - has just "changed its skin" with a completely new look. The Japanese car company has released a series of images and short videos revealing the Toyota Century One of One Concept - a two-door, tall, sporty fastback, expected to debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 later this month. Turning the luxury Toyota Century into a sports car is an unexpected move by Toyota. In addition, the exterior design of the car is also quite confusing.
At first glance, this is not a normal GT. The reason is because the car has a tall body and a square front end like an SUV while the passenger side door slides electrically like an MPV. Notably, the car does not have a B-pillar separating the body, making the overall side look seamless and elegant. In contrast to the passenger side door, the driver side door opens in a traditional way, creating a rather interesting contrast. Toyota seems to be deliberately keeping it a secret to attract curiosity. The front of the car still comes with the familiar phoenix badge of the Toyota Century line. Meanwhile, the rear area impresses with the taillights connecting the two sides. The fastback design and the removal of the rear glass, reminiscent of Volvo's Polestar electric car, shows that Toyota's design team was allowed to experiment freely with the Century One of One Concept.
Some rumors have suggested a center-mounted driver's seat, but that seems unlikely unless the floor can be lowered or the driver's seat can slide out for easier entry and exit, a feature typically found on the McLaren F1 supercar and not appropriate for a business car like the Toyota Century. Toyota Century One of One Concept has a nearly completely closed grille as a hint that the car may still use a traditional engine inside. According to predictions, the car will be equipped with a hybrid transmission with a 3.5L V6 gasoline engine like the Toyota Century SUV or a hybrid transmission with a V8 gasoline engine taken from the sedan version. Toyota calls this model “One of One,” which seems to imply that this is not a commercial vehicle, at least at this point. It is more likely that this is just a design statement, or a bespoke model for super-rich customers, demonstrating the high-end customization capabilities of the Century brand. However, Toyota's expansion of this "luxury" car line with an SUV version in 2024 shows that the company is turning the Century into a global brand, not just a traditional sedan for the Japanese market.
Whether it's a bold experiment or a new flagship model of the future, one thing we know for sure is that Toyota has realized the huge untapped potential of the Century brand. The answer will be revealed when the Toyota Century One of One Concept officially debuts at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 opening on October 30 in its home market of Japan.
