River Monster Adventures, the company that organized the fishing trip, said the giant white sturgeon was nicknamed "Ghost" because it had been seen for 15 years but no one had ever caught it. A 3.1m long, 317kg white sturgeon was caught by anglers on the Fraser River, south of Lillooet (Canada) on July 7.
River Monster Adventures said the father, dubbed "Ghost," had been tagged. It is estimated to be between 120 and 140 years old. Jeff Grimolfson, owner of River Monster Adventures, told Global News that capturing "Ghost" was exciting and thrilling.
"I was really nervous. I thought, 'Oh my God, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,'" Mr Grimolfson said of catching the 317kg white sturgeon. Mr Grimolfson said he had dreamed of this moment all his life. He has spent nearly 20 years leading fishing expeditions. "We've been lucky that everything has gone smoothly. We've got a great team, a group of guys from Alberta - and yeah, it's been great," Mr Grimolfson added.
The white sturgeon is one of the largest and longest-living fish in the world . After being measured, weighed, tagged and photographed, the giant fish was released back into the Fraser River.
