Coach Park Hang-seo's terrifying experience in Cambodia

Coach Park Hang-seo recounted the terrifying experience on SBS.

On the SBS program "Take Off Your Shoes and Be a Single Man" aired in March last year, Mr. Park said that during his 4-day vacation, he and his wife traveled to Cambodia . That evening, when he landed at the airport, the Korean coach could not find a taxi and was approached by a young man.

"But as soon as I got in the taxi, the music sounded strange, the driver kept glancing at my wallet and asking to exchange Korean money for Vietnamese currency. I immediately felt uneasy," Mr. Park recalled. Not stopping there, instead of following the familiar route, the driver turned onto a mountain road.

Despite being asked to stop, he was led to an empty lot where about 10 people were sitting drinking tea. "I told my wife to calm down and hope someone would recognize me," he said. Thanks to the appearance of a man in the group, he and his wife were taken out of the dangerous situation. "I can laugh now, but at that time it was really shocking," Coach Park admitted.

Park's story was recently published by Chosun newspaper in the context of a continuous increase in crimes targeting Korean citizens in Cambodia. The South Korean Foreign Ministry said the number of kidnappings of Korean citizens in Cambodia has increased sharply, from 10-20 cases per year (2022-2023) to 220 cases last year and 330 cases by August this year.

In light of this situation, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised its travel warning for Phnom Penh to "Special Warning" level and advised citizens to limit or postpone unnecessary trips.
