European media shocked after Indonesia fired Kluivert

The decision by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to terminate the contract with coach Patrick Kluivert not only caused shock in Jakarta but also spread to Europe.

Kluivert lost his job after failing to help Indonesia qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Immediately after PSSI made the official announcement on October 16, a series of European newspapers simultaneously reported the news. Voetbal Primeur (Netherlands) had a short but meaningful headline: “Breaking news: Kluivert and Indonesia officially part ways after failing to qualify for the World Cup”.

The site’s sports writer added that Kluivert’s short journey in Southeast Asia ended “in silence and disappointment”, even though the Dutch strategist was once welcomed as a symbol of a new era of attacking football in Indonesia.

De Telegraaf , one of the largest sports newspapers in the Netherlands, went further into the cause: “The high expectations of the Indonesian public made Kluivert a victim of terrible pressure. When he could not bring Garuda to the World Cup, he had to pay with his own seat.”

The newspaper also commented that Kluivert - once a symbol of the Dutch "Golden Generation" of the 1990s - chose a difficult path when coming to Southeast Asia to coach a football team that was eager to reach new heights but lacked the necessary stability.

The Sun (UK) newspaper ran the headline: "Kluivert sacked by Indonesia team after only 9 months". Goal emphasized the detail that Indonesia team could not qualify for the 2026 World Cup as the reason why the former Dutch player lost his job.

With this decision, PSSI enters a new transition period with less than a month left before the FIFA Days series in November. In addition, the Indonesian team will have to prepare for the AFF Cup 2026 and Asian Cup 2027 - pivotal tournaments for the ambition to reach the continent.

Meanwhile, the Dutch press commented that PSSI would "have a hard time finding a successor of international stature like Kluivert", while in Europe, experts consider this a typical lesson for famous European coaches entering the Asian football environment - where expectations sometimes exceed reality.

The departure of Patrick Kluivert closes a short but turbulent chapter in the journey of Indonesian football. And from Amsterdam to Jakarta, people have the same question: Who is strong enough to revive Garuda after this earthquake?
