North Korea says it will continue to upgrade its nuclear weapons.

(CLO) On Monday, North Korea vowed to relentlessly upgrade and strengthen its nuclear forces, accusing G7 foreign ministers of violating its sovereign rights by demanding an end to its nuclear weapons program, according to state news agency KCNA.

North Korea has repeatedly stated that it is developing and strengthening its nuclear forces as part of its self-defense strategy.

The move comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula and international sanctions against Pyongyang's nuclear program. The international community, especially the G7 group, continues to call on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons and engage in denuclearization talks.

However, North Korea insists its nuclear program is necessary to counter external threats.

Earlier, in a joint statement after a three-day meeting in Canada, G7 foreign ministers called on North Korea to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and condemned Pyongyang's military support for Russia in the conflict in Ukraine.

In response, North Korea's Foreign Ministry accused the G7 of being a "malicious and illegal nuclear proliferation group" through nuclear sharing activities or providing extended deterrence.

North Korea stressed that it will continue to innovate and strengthen its nuclear capabilities in both quality and quantity in line with external nuclear threats and in accordance with the country's constitution and laws.

Amid rising tensions, North Korea recently released images of leader Kim Jong Un inspecting a nuclear material production facility and a nuclear weapons research institute. Mr. Kim stressed the importance of increasing the production of weapons-grade nuclear material in 2025 and the following years to strengthen the country's nuclear force.
