A 10-kV ground cable was successfully laid in an undersea channel in waters north of Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, on January 4, marking the completion of the first project of its kind in China. The cable will help transmit electricity between two islands in the Zhoushan archipelago, an archipelago of 2,085 islands of various sizes.

Previously, submarine cables were always considered an important source of electricity for the islands. However, the number of ships passing through this area is increasing due to the rapid development of the shipping and fishing industries. When anchored, ships often damage submarine cables. Factors such as climate and tides also make it difficult to detect damage and salvage, causing economic losses.

The new cable, which is 1 km long, replaces the undersea cable that is easily damaged when ships are anchored, said the local branch of the China Power Grid Corporation. The ground cable is buried deeper than the anchorage, reducing the risk of damage, said Li Zhen, head of the company that designed the project.

The ground cable is also cheaper and suitable for short-distance power transmission between islands, Li said. The new method will be widely applied to connect islands with short and medium distances, no more than 2 kilometers. The long-term goal is to establish connections between islands with medium and long distances.
