Of the 4,038 Ford GTs produced between 2005 and 2006, only a handful hold a special place in Ford history. The 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition No. 3 featured here is not only a limited-edition supercar, but also the first Heritage Edition to be released to the public. This No. 3 is significant not only because of the production order, but also because it represents one of the first physical embodiments of Ford's tribute to legendary motorsport victories of the 1960s.
According to research, the first two cars were kept by Ford for internal purposes, making this car the first Heritage Edition to reach users, but it was mostly in the garage, rarely taken out on the road, and this is about to happen when the car is auctioned. The 2006 Heritage Edition was created to honor Ford's historic 1-2-3 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and cement Ford's place in motorsport history, particularly the Gulf-badged GT40s that dominated endurance racing in the late 1960s. Dressed in a distinctive Gulf Blue and orange livery, this edition is instantly reminiscent of the GT40 Mk I that won Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. Ford’s decision to revive this color scheme is more than just nostalgia. It’s a tribute to innovation, endurance, and the racing spirit. Only 343 Heritage Editions were produced for 2006, making each one a highly sought-after collector's item. In addition to the paint, the Heritage Edition features special orange racing stripes, white rings, and heritage badging, setting it apart from the standard GT.
Inside, the cabin features black leather seats with embossed GT logos, a six-speed manual transmission, and a minimalist design focused on driver engagement. Beneath the traditional paintwork, the No. 3 exudes pure modern performance. The 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition is powered by a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, transmitted through a six-speed manual transmission. Even nearly two decades later, those numbers are still impressive. The combination of raw power and analog feel captures the essence of the Ford GT program: building a machine worthy of its legendary ancestor, but with 21st-century engineering. Another distinction of the Heritage Edition No. 3 is its provenance. This GT was owned and used exclusively by Ford Motor Company throughout its life. It served as a marketing and communications vehicle, appearing in promotional materials and events. Such use gives the car a unique historical cachet.
With 8,435 miles on the odometer, this GT has been tested, not stored, but always lovingly preserved. Today, the sale will contribute to Ford’s Heritage Fleet program, announced by 2025, supporting the restoration and maintenance of nearly 500 historic Ford vehicles worldwide . The car's history includes two minor incidents: a rear-end collision in November 2005 and a rollover in October 2006, which resulted in underbody damage. However, both were reported to be minor and consistent with the car's intended use for testing and media work. This Ford GT Heritage Edition No. 3 is slated to be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale with the lot listed as “2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition No. 3,” bringing this legendary car to the global collectors. On the market, Heritage editions range in price from $640,000 to over $1,000,000. The current common list price is around $679,000.
