Open RAN is an open telecommunications network standard defined by the O-RAN Alliance - an alliance of network operators and equipment manufacturers around the world . The goal of Open RAN is to facilitate the participation of many partners in the research and production of 5G telecommunications equipment.

In 2024, the Open RAN conference made a splash when Viettel announced the commercialization of Vietnamese 5G equipment. This year, the program continues with the theme "Enabling the Future: Core Technologies for Open RAN at Scale", focusing on core technologies for deploying Open RAN on a global scale.

The event gathered representatives of organizations, telecommunications enterprises, domestic and foreign researchers to discuss the roadmap for expanding the commercialization of Open RAN, towards an efficient and sustainable digital infrastructure. Speakers came from the Global Mobile Association (GSMA), the International Association for Open RAN (O-RAN Alliance); the Ministry of Science and Technology ; Qualcomm Group, Viettel High Tech, Viettel Networks, Gartner...

In particular, GSMA will share about the development potential and impact of Open RAN technology on the global telecommunications industry. O-RAN Alliance will update the current development status of ORAN and orientation for the upcoming 5G–6G network era.

Qualcomm highlighted the importance of application-specific processing chips (ASIC) in expanding the Open RAN platform. Gartner published a 5G RAN market analysis report, which specifically recognized a Vietnamese enterprise for the first time in the "Gartner Magic Quadrant 2025 for CSP 5G RAN Infrastructure Solutions" report - an important reference document for network operators when choosing equipment suppliers. Viettel representatives will also share their experience in large-scale practical deployment in Vietnam, contributing to affirming Vietnam's position on the world telecommunications map.

Vietnam becomes a meeting point of the global 5G community

Open RAN Connect 2025 affirms that Vietnam has become one of the new centers of the global Open RAN movement. This is not only a technology forum but also demonstrates the pioneering ability of a Vietnamese enterprise in working with international partners to shape the future telecommunications infrastructure.

Also at the conference, representatives of a number of global market research companies will announce international reports and awards honoring Vietnamese telecommunications equipment. This is a big step forward not only for Viettel but also for Vietnam when for the first time a Made in Vietnam technology product has received recognition from many prestigious market research units in the world. This recognition continues to affirm Vietnam's technological capacity to reach out to the world, while marking the strategic cooperation between Viettel and Qualcomm from 2022. After only 7 months of cooperation, at MWC Barcelona 2023, the two sides launched the world's first 5G radio unit (RU) using Open RAN standard ASIC chipset, an achievement that traditional manufacturers have taken many years to achieve.

In November 2024, Viettel officially commercialized the "Make in Vietnam" 5G Open RAN ASIC base station - a milestone affirming the autonomous research and development capacity of 5G equipment of Vietnamese enterprises.

By the end of December 2025, Viettel High Tech will deploy 2,500 5G Open RAN stations nationwide. Test results show that Viettel 5G devices using Qualcomm chipsets help save up to 24% of power under high load conditions, while maintaining stable performance with download speeds of 1.2–1.7 Gb/s, on par with the world's leading suppliers.
