The play "Water Demon" by Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang, evil deeds bring karma

Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang always creates conditions for young actors to shine in the play "Water Demon" that he directed.

Recently, there have been a series of shocking cases such as a maid kidnapping and murdering a 2-year-old girl; a 17-year-old girl whose body was dismembered and dumped in the Red River; or a lover killing and then committing suicide in Bac Ninh ... The theater cannot stand aside and sound the alarm.

The play "Water Demon" was staged from the script of 3 young authors: Nha Uyen, Thanh Phuong and Quoc Huy. All 3 were students of the scriptwriting training class of Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang and this play is the first work that the "Kathlete's Hamlet" stage introduced to the young actors, promoting its own products after a period of studying scriptwriting and acting from basic to advanced.

Choosing a difficult topic for students to express their creative thinking, and at the same time enter the fate of characters with many different psychological levels, Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang and his wife, artist Hoang Thy, have put all their efforts into this "big game".

Because, for a long time, only in the small stage, a series of plays were cheered by the audience, but now that the Experimental Theater of Ho Chi Minh City Dance School has opened its doors to welcome, the "Drama Hamlet" stage has a worthy work that is staged seriously and responsibly.

The play takes place far from the city, where the people upstream and downstream make a living by their own hard work. Downstream, there is Mr. Hao's family, who, in addition to farming, also takes up the job of retrieving corpses from the river.

For the unfortunate victims who died due to being swept away by the water, he was the one who did the salvage work, even diving to the bottom of the deep river to find the bodies, bringing them back to contact their relatives or burying them himself. Then, unexpectedly, one day, he himself accepted someone else's request for help to retrieve his daughter's body.

From that pain, many hidden corners of evil and cruelty that even Mr. Hao could not have imagined emerged. Although borrowing the context of a different era to reflect the depravity of evildoers, Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang wanted to reflect today's life when a group of evildoers have the heart to take the lives of their own relatives and lovers.

The case of the body thrown in the Red River is a heartbreaking bell, and for theater people, it is impossible to stay out of that heartbreaking pain.

Actor Thanh Phuong, after winning first prize in the "2023 Drama Actor Talent Competition" organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2023, has had a very impressive new role (Mr. Duong), with the strong support of artist Hoang Thy (as Mrs. Duong).

Choosing the perspective from the common characteristics in recent shocking murder cases, the perpetrator and the victim have a close relationship. They can be grandchildren, lovers, parents and lovers... the group of authors cleverly interweaved and connected so that the perpetrator and the victim have a deep affection, but the play also condemns those who assist and cover up the crime, and the "Water Demons" are the wandering souls, crying day and night because the evil still exists.

The characters in the play are portrayed by the actors truthfully and delicately. Although they are young actors, they are highly trained, reflecting the play's ideology when condemning the evil that is masquerading as goodness, existing in life and if not eliminated, it will be blind support.

That's why when Mr. Hao knew who did the crime, he did not take revenge. His sister, Mrs. Duong, tried to stop him because only the law was strong enough to punish such a cruel and heartless person.

The methods and tricks of committing crimes are handled delicately by the director, not following the trend of using violence to create popularity, that's why Meritorious Artist Vu Xuan Trang has a very unique way of telling stories, both creating suspense for the audience and creating space for her students to perform.

With the message, in life, everything that happens has a cause, whether it is success or failure, good or bad. "Karma" means that doing good will result in good results, and doing evil will result in evil results. "The law of karma" is the method, the law that tries to make people afraid to stay away from and not help evil.

The play "Water Demon" will be performed at the Experimental Theater of Ho Chi Minh City Dance School on December 2, 10, 16 and 23.
