The goal of training 50,000 university-level semiconductor engineers in Vietnam by 2030 is completely feasible if implemented synchronously between the State, businesses and universities.

This was affirmed by Professor Usagawa Tsuyoshi, special advisor to the President of Vietnam-Japan University and a leading Japanese semiconductor expert, at a press conference organized by the JICA Office (Japan International Cooperation Agency) on the afternoon of October 14.

At the press conference, Professor Usagawa Tsuyoshi emphasized that Vietnam is facing a "golden opportunity" to develop the semiconductor industry in the context of the shifting global supply chain.

He cited that the top 8 Japanese corporations alone need about 40,000 new semiconductor engineers in the next 10 years.

The demand for high-quality human resources in Vietnam, where there are more than 40 semiconductor enterprises (mainly in the design and packaging-testing stages), is forecast to be very large.

To realize the goal of 50,000 engineers, intensive training programs play the role of "kindling".

Vietnam Japan University (VJU) has pioneered in establishing the Bachelor of Semiconductor Chip Engineering Technology program.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Nguyen Quoc Trinh, Director of the Semiconductor Chip Engineering Technology Program at VJU, said that this is the first direct training program on semiconductor technology in Vietnam, lasting 5 years, with an enrollment scale of 100 students/year.

It is expected that by 2030, VJU will supply about 400 semiconductor engineers to the market.

A prominent feature of the VJU program is the close cooperation with leading Japanese academic partners such as the University of Tokyo and Kumamoto University.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Nguyen Quoc Trinh, the biggest challenge is not "training enough people" but "training the right capacity" that businesses need.

Experts say the "university - enterprise - research institute" cooperation model is the key to sustainability.

In Vietnam, a human resource ecosystem is being formed with the participation of units under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VJU, University of Science , University of Technology, Institute of Information Technology) and the newly established Institute of Advanced Materials and Semiconductors.

Notably, large domestic corporations such as Viettel andFPT have expanded their operations into the semiconductor sector. Viettel is promoting plans to build the first chip foundry in Vietnam, aiming to fill the missing key link in the national value chain.

Professor Usagawa Tsuyoshi emphasized that developing high-tech human resources is a vital factor, especially in a high-risk but high-profit industry like semiconductors.
