Infantino's new 'craze' - Will the World Cup leave the summer?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has once again caused a stir in the football world.

Mr. Gianni Infantino wants to change the schedule of the World Cup finals.

Speaking at the European Club Congress (EFC), the FIFA President revealed an idea that could change the international competition calendar for decades to come: moving the World Cup from the summer to a permanent autumn.

“We are discussing and considering it carefully. It is not just a question of the World Cup, but of the way football is organised globally. In Europe, playing in July is too hot, so maybe it is time to rethink,” Infantino said.

This move reminds many people of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when FIFA was forced to postpone the tournament to November-December to avoid summer temperatures of nearly 50°C. Although criticized for breaking the traditional schedule, that tournament brought a different experience, both favorable weather and helping players reach their peak form after the early stages of the season.

With the 2034 World Cup set to be held in Saudi Arabia, where summers are equally harsh, Infantino believes moving the tournament to autumn could become a long-term trend. “June used to be considered the ideal time to play football, but in many places in Europe and Asia it is too hot. Maybe it is time to optimize the global schedule,” he added.

Infantino also suggested that March and October are the two ideal timeframes if tournaments can be played simultaneously in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres: “It is not possible to play in one place in December and another in July. We need a more harmonious system for both clubs and teams, for the common good of football.”

If this proposal becomes reality, world football could enter a whole new era of fixtures - where autumn World Cups are no longer the exception, but the norm.
