Recently, the restriction of Vietnamese rice imports from the Philippines has caused Vietnam's rice exports to both decrease in output and face pressure to reduce prices. Although there are many solutions to overcome difficulties, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that there are still many favorable conditions to ensure the export target of more than 8 million tons of rice this year.
Last September, many rice containers of Vietnamese businesses were forced to turn back from the port to the warehouse, causing great losses.

Mr. Le Ha Phong - Director of Manoramas Company Limited, shared: "The Philippines banned imports, so the price of Vietnamese rice decreased, and the inventory of businesses also decreased in value, leading to many difficulties in business activities. Another difficulty is that signed contracts cannot be implemented, and loans to purchase goods have come due from banks but there is no money to pay, which is also a huge difficulty. This year was quite unexpected and without prior notice, so Vietnamese businesses were not able to react in time and incurred many costs."
However, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), this is only a temporary suspension of imports for 60 days, not a complete closure and above all, the Philippines still considers Vietnam a strategic rice supplier. At the same time, many domestic enterprises are also implementing the goal of diversifying export types, reducing dependence on a few large markets.
Mr. Phan Van Co - Marketing Director of Vrice Rice Company Limited, said: "The African market accounts for 7-8%, we will reduce prices for other markets to clear out inventory"
Mr. Do Ha Nam - Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), said: "September and October will also be difficult for Vietnam if our rice volume is affected by this market. But fortunately, we have some good markets such as Africa, which, like every year, stops, but this year continues to buy. This is a favorable condition."

After 1 month of the Philippines' temporary suspension of rice imports, the prices of some types of exported rice have decreased by 50 - 100 VND/kg, while in the domestic market, prices are relatively stable because the production and consumption chain is still operating.

According to experts, overall, Vietnam's rice output remains stable and import demand in many markets will return at the end of the year.
Dr. Tran Minh Hai - Vice Principal of the School of Public Policy and Rural Development ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ). To maintain the 2025 export target as planned, businesses need to learn about the export standards of other countries. Domestically, it is necessary to ensure the improvement of the quality standard control system. Improve the operational efficiency of cooperatives to increase production scale, create large raw material areas to go further.
Overall, Vietnam's rice exports in 2025 will still maintain a good growth rate. Many new markets are expanding, import demand is expected to increase again by the end of the year. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is also implementing a series of key solutions: perfecting the legal corridor, enhancing supply-demand forecasting, promoting trade, negotiating and signing new contracts, and promoting the Vietnamese rice brand, in order to stabilize the market and ensure the competitiveness of Vietnamese rice.
Despite facing short-term fluctuations, the Vietnamese rice industry has still demonstrated its adaptability and ability to maintain its position in the international market. By 2025, the target of exporting more than 8 million tons of rice is not just a number, but also a testament to the belief, resilience and sustainable development strategy of Vietnamese rice.
