According to information from the official website of Bali tourism , authorities of the island known as the "resort paradise" in Indonesia have begun to impose a tourist tax of 150,000 rupiah (about 9.6 USD).
The tourism tax was introduced to tackle overtourism on the popular island. Bali officials said the revenue from the tax would go towards tourism management and cultural preservation, environmental clean-up efforts and disaster management, as well as improving the quality and infrastructure of services, ensuring safety and comfort for tourists.
The tax will be applied to foreign tourists coming to Bali. Some cases are exempted from the tax, such as: holders of diplomatic passports, official passports; aircrew, ship crew; holders of temporary residence cards in Indonesia (KITAS) or permanent residence cards in Indonesia (KITAP); holders of family reunification visas, golden visas or student visas; and those issued with other types of visas for non-tourism purposes.
Bali authorities advise tourists to pay this tax before arriving in Bali through the official Bali tourism website: https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id or through the LoveBali smart application.
Before the new regulations were implemented, Bali had pledged to take a tough stance on misbehaving tourists following a series of incidents involving foreign tourists disrespecting local culture.
The island, which attracts millions of foreign tourists each year, is trying to capitalize on its appeal to boost revenue and protect its landscape. According to official figures, more than 2 million tourists visited Bali in 2023, and the government believes the new tax will not reduce the number of tourists coming to Bali.
