The Ocean Explorer cruise ship carrying more than 200 passengers and crew ran aground off the coast of Greenland on September 11 and was successfully rescued three days later.

The Danish military confirmed that the luxury cruise ship Ocean Explorer, carrying 206 passengers and crew, ran aground off the east coast of Greenland and was rescued and towed to shore on September 14.

The ship, which is more than 100 meters long and 18 meters wide, had previously attempted to escape the stranded area but was unsuccessful. Denmark sent a large naval vessel to assist, scheduled to arrive on September 15. However, before the naval ship arrived, a Greenland fisheries research vessel passed by and rescued the yacht.

At the time of the accident, three passengers on board were quarantined for Covid-19. The rest were healthy. SunStone, the ship’s owner based in Florida, USA, said the passengers and the ship were not in danger and there was no environmental pollution due to the grounding.

A representative of the cruise line said they were "grateful" to those on board for "excellent cooperation in difficult and unexpected circumstances." The ship was taken to a nearby port to assess the damage. Passengers were allowed to disembark so they could return home by air, ending their trip early.

Lis, a passenger, said no one panicked about the incident. If there was any fear, it was that “the booze would run out before we were rescued.” Another passenger, Tracey Varga from Phoenix, Arizona, said most people on board were optimistic and “trying their best.” The crew were said to have been helpful.

Australian tourist Debbie Brown said that thanks to her two nights stuck, she had the chance to see the aurora borealis and it was "very exciting".
