According to Reuters news agency, the European Union (EU) has started implementing the exit and entry system (EES) at border gates outside the bloc since October 12, aiming to digitize the registration process and information management of non-EU citizens.
The EES is an automated system that requires visitors to register by scanning their passports, taking fingerprints and taking a photo at the border. The system is expected to be rolled out within six months.
The move is expected to help the EU detect overstayers, prevent identity fraud and curb illegal immigration, as many member states are under political pressure to tighten border controls.
"The entry and exit system will become the digital foundation for the new European framework on migration and asylum," European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner said in a statement.
Non-EU citizens will have to register their personal details when they first enter the Schengen area – which includes all EU member states (except Ireland and Cyprus), plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Subsequent entries will only require facial verification via biometric data.
The EES will be rolled out gradually over the next six months, before becoming fully operational on April 10, 2026, replacing passport stamps with electronic records.
“Every third country national arriving at the border must undergo identity verification, security checks and registration in the EU database,” Mr Brunner added.
At the Bajakovo border crossing between Serbia and EU member Croatia, hundreds of people - mostly Serbian citizens - queued for about 20 minutes to have their faces scanned and fingerprints taken.
"There were five lanes operating so we waited for about 20 minutes. It took each person about two minutes to complete the procedure," said Serbian citizen Dalibor Vranic.
For UK travellers, EES check-in will be done at the border when leaving the country, at points such as the port of Dover, the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone and the Eurostar terminal at London St Pancras.
UK Border Security and Asylum Minister Alex Norris said: "The UK and the EU share the same goal of protecting our borders. These modernisation measures will help us protect our citizens and prevent illegal immigration."
