The South Korean military says several North Korean soldiers were hit by landmines in the demilitarized zone on the border between the two countries.
A photo released by the South Korean Defense Ministry on June 18 shows North Korean soldiers working at an unidentified location near the border, seen from a South Korean guard area. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that about 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers carrying work tools crossed the military demarcation line in the DMZ area at around 8:30 a.m. on June 18. The South Korean military broadcast warnings and fired warning shots, prompting the North Korean soldiers to return to their side of the border. According to a JCS official, the incident appeared to be accidental. The JCS added that several North Korean soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion in the border area. The demilitarized zone and the demarcation line that divides the peninsula have become one of the most mined places in the world. Photo: AFP.
