Car imports into Vietnam exploded significantly in the first 8 months of 2025 with a total of 137,821 imported cars, equivalent to a value of 3.02 billion USD. This figure increased by 38.3% compared to the same period in 2024 and is the highest ever.
Of which, the number of cars with less than 9 seats continued to dominate the import market with more than 104,000 cars imported in the past 8 months, up 19.6% compared to the previous year. Trucks were 17,756 units, up 95.8%, reflecting the strong demand of the freight market.
The import turnover of completely built-up cars in the first 8 months increased by 836 million USD compared to the same period last year. In August 2025 alone, although the number of imported cars decreased by 13.6% to 16,274 units with a value of 363 million USD, the overall trend still shows the strong attraction of the Vietnamese car market.

Indonesia, Thailand and China are still the top three in supplying cars to the Vietnamese market, accounting for 94% of the total imported cars. Indonesia maintained its number one position with 51,955 cars worth over 736 million USD. Thailand ranked second with 47,334 cars completing import procedures, reaching a turnover of over 935 million USD.
Most notable is the "explosion" of Chinese cars in the Vietnamese market. From a modest number of 6,990 cars in the first 8 months of 2023 with a turnover of nearly 272 million USD, Chinese cars have made a great leap forward to 19,649 cars worth nearly 582 million USD in the same period in 2024.
The year 2025 witnessed an impressive leap when the number of imported cars from China reached 30,506 units after 8 months, with a total value approaching the 1 billion USD mark. This growth clearly reflects the aggressive market expansion strategy of Chinese car brands.
The current wave of Chinese autos is driven by the emergence of many new brands such as BYD, GAC, Omoda, Jaecoo, and Geely. These companies have adopted a diversified strategy, importing directly from China while also taking advantage of production bases in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Typical models imported directly from China include Geely EX5, Geely Monjaro and the entire product line of BYD, GAC. The MG brand, although having been associated with Vietnamese consumers for a long time, is also shifting to importing New MG5, MG7, MG G50 models from the Chinese market.
The strong increase in imported Chinese cars coincides with the rapid expansion of the country's auto industry into the international market. However, products from China still face challenges in terms of competitiveness in both price (due to the impact of import tariffs) and product quality due to lack of experience and the brand is still new to Vietnamese consumers.
