MU legend: 'Gyokeres only scores against small teams'

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has his doubts about Viktor Gyokeres, stressing that most of his goals were scored against weaker teams.

Premier League and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed his doubts about Arsenal's move to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

“Most of his goals in Portugal have come against teams in the bottom half of the table. That’s a warning sign ,” Rio Ferdinand said.

“That doesn't make me against signing Gyokeres , but it certainly makes me take a closer look at his record,” the former England midfielder continued.

Last season, in four matches against his two main rivals Porto and Benfica, the Swedish striker only scored one goal from the penalty spot.

Additionally, he was ineffective against Arsenal themselves in a 1-5 home defeat in the Champions League, being closely marked by centre-backs Williams Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

“Gyokeres was up against two 'machines' – opponents that always make things difficult for any striker – and he didn't show the same sharpness as in other games where he usually wins with physicality,” Ferdinand analyzed, referring to the match against Arsenal.

“If the physique is the same, what else does he have to offer? That's what I ask myself,” Ferdinand stressed.

However, Ferdinand does not completely doubt the 26-year-old striker's ability when joining Emirates Stadium.

“At Arsenal he will have more chances to score goals. I don’t think it is too big a gamble.

With players like Saka having shouldered the goalscoring burden over the years, Gyokeres can help ease that pressure . ”
