Responding to World Standards Day on October 14 - an event initiated by the world's three leading standards organizations: the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Vietnam is affirming its role as an active and proactive member in the standardization efforts for sustainable development. With more than 14,000 national standards, hundreds of technical regulations issued and an increasingly high rate of international harmonization, Vietnam is gradually integrating deeply and widely, building a solid foundation for a green and digital economy.
Since 2021, the leaders of the three organizations ISO, IEC and ITU have agreed on a long-term theme: “Standards for SDGs – Our shared vision for a better world”.
This message is a call for the international community to affirm the role of standards in realizing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations.
This year, the global campaign focuses on SDG Goal 17 – Partnership for the Goals, emphasizing that only through cooperation, sharing and joint action can humanity address global challenges such as climate change, clean energy, smart cities, data security or digital transformation.
According to the joint message of ISO, IEC and ITU, “standards provide a common framework, strengthen trust and promote cooperation among many parties towards sustainable development”. International standards are considered the “common language” of the modern world, helping products and services to be compatible, connected and operate together on a global scale.
In Vietnam, standardization has always been identified as an important foundation for socio-economic development, especially in the context of deep integration and strong digital transformation.
The Ministry of Science and Technology – the national focal point for standards, metrology and quality – is currently an official member of ISO, IEC and many regional standards organizations.
In recent years, the field of standards, measurement and quality has achieved many outstanding results. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, there are currently more than 14,000 national standards (TCVN) and more than 800 national technical regulations (QCVN) issued, with an international harmonization rate exceeding 63%.
This system of standards and regulations covers most socio-economic fields, plays an important role in improving the quality of products, goods and services, and at the same time meets the requirements of state management and international integration.
Notably, Vietnam's National Quality Infrastructure Index (GQII) in 2023 ranked 52nd in the world, up 2 places compared to 2020. This result reflects the continuous efforts in building a modern, synchronous system of standards, measurements and quality in accordance with international standards.
These figures also demonstrate Vietnam's determination in deep integration and sustainable development, while affirming the country's position on the international map of standards, measurement and quality.
In the context of green transformation and digital transformation, the role of standards is becoming increasingly crucial. The Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality, Ministry of Science and Technology is implementing many standardization programs related to circular economy, smart manufacturing, smart cities and information security, aiming to create a foundation for the sustainable development of the digital economy and green economy.
