Mount criticized for being 'invisible' in Man Utd's loss

VnExpressVnExpress02/11/2023

According to former player Gary Neville, Mason Mount seemed to disappear when Tino Livramento passed him in the Man Utd - Newcastle match on the evening of November 1.

In the 28th minute, after winning the ball back in Newcastle’s half, Livramento dribbled past Mount in a one-on-one situation. The 20-year-old full-back then moved into the middle and set up Miguel Almiron to break the deadlock.

"Mount was like he wasn't there," said former Man Utd defender Gary Neville after the League Cup fourth-round match.

Mount's sloppy tackle also caused a stir on social media. Many members joked that the Man Utd shirt was so tight that Mount looked small and unable to tackle. "If only Mount's shirt wasn't so tight, Livramento wouldn't have been able to get past him as if Mount wasn't there," wrote Paddy Power.

Some other fans questioned Mount’s ability, claiming that Mount had given Livramento such a smooth path that it was almost a walk in the park. “Livramento opened our eyes,” one user wrote on social media platform X. “He dribbled the ball like Mount was nothing.”

Mount joined Man Utd from Chelsea for $70 million in the summer. However, shortly after the transfer, the 24-year-old midfielder suffered an injury. He has played only nine games for his new team, assisted once and has yet to score. Before that, Mount scored 33 goals, assisted 37 times in 195 games for Chelsea, and scored five goals in 36 games for England.

The defeat to Newcastle on the evening of November 1st deepened Man Utd's crisis. After nearly three months of the season, the "Red Devils" were eliminated from the League Cup, the tournament in which they beat Newcastle 2-0 in the final last season, ranked eighth after 10 rounds of the Premier League, and ranked third after three matches in Group A of the Champions League.

Erik Ten Hag's future is uncertain. According to former player Paul Merson, the Dutch coach has lost the confidence of his players. If he cannot save the situation in the next three matches against Fulham, Copenhagen and Luton Town, he could be sacked.
