When does the first rain of the season appear in Tien Giang during the severe drought and salinity in the West?

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Man, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, according to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Agency, the first rain of the season is expected to appear in late April and early May 2024.

By mid-May 2024, the rainy season will officially begin in Tien Giang in particular and the Western provinces in general. Therefore, the heat, the severity of drought and salinity will last in Tien Giang province for more than 1 month.

Recently, in Tien Giang province, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha had a working session with the Mekong Delta provinces on drought and salinity prevention and control.

At the working session, Mr. Hoang Duc Cuong, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Hydrometeorology - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment , said that saltwater intrusion in 2024 in the Mekong Delta will occur early and deep into the fields.

Saltwater intrusion peaked on March 13, encroaching about 45km into river mouths. In particular, in Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces, saltwater intrusion reached more than 60km into river mouths.

It is forecasted that the heat and drought in Tien Giang province will last for about 1 month. Severe drought and salinity in the West, including Tien Giang province, has caused small canals and streams to dry up, saltwater intrusion has increased the risk of affecting fruit orchards...

Saltwater intrusion in the dry season in the Mekong Delta provinces in 2015 - 2016, 2019 - 2020, 2023 - 2024 were all due to the influence of the El Nino phenomenon.

However, saline intrusion in the dry season of 2023 - 2024 will not be as severe as in 2015 - 2016 and 2019 - 2020.

Although the 2024 saltwater intrusion will come early, it will be about 20 days later than the 2015-2016 and 2019-2020 dry seasons. The flow at the beginning of this year's dry season is still higher than the two previous "historic" droughts and saltwater intrusions.

In particular, the water capacity in Tonle Sap (Cambodia) is higher than in the dry seasons of 2015 - 2016 and 2019 - 2020. However, the general situation is that the El Nino phenomenon has led to no unseasonal rain.

According to Mr. Hoang Duc Cuong, in the coming time, the El Nino phenomenon is forecast to have turned neutral and will turn into La Nina. However, the impact of El Nino will still exist, but will not last long.

Specifically, in the South, the heat is forecast to last until about April 20. From April 20 onwards, there will be unseasonal rains but not continuously, only solving the heat problem and providing an insignificant amount of water.

This year's rainy season came later than usual (about 10-15 days). From May 10 to 15, there will be longer rains and then the drought situation will be resolved. From May 20 onwards, the rainy season will officially begin in the South.
