The project is chaired by Dr. Nguyen Van Quyen; the host agency is Hanoi National University of Education ( Ministry of Education and Training ), aiming to build a theoretical and practical basis to assess the current status of capacity to implement sustainable development (SD) in some biosphere reserves (BSRs) in Vietnam; to build a process and model to improve capacity to implement SD for stakeholders in 03 BSRs in Vietnam.
Reporting at the Meeting, Dr. Nguyen Van Quyen emphasized that sustainable development is a top priority in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), especially specified in the Lima Action Plan (2016-2025). World Biosphere Reserves play a key role in implementing sustainable development goals through three functions: conservation, development and logistical support. However, this process in Vietnam still faces many challenges due to the lack of specific and synchronous solutions.
Dr. Nguyen Van Quyen, on behalf of the research team, presented a summary of the research content and results of the task.
After the implementation period, the research team has achieved remarkable results. Notably, the construction and pilot operation of 3 models to improve capacity for sustainable development in 3 biosphere reserves; including the co-management and plastic waste reduction model in Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve. The results show that the model has a clear positive impact on the awareness and actions of the community, especially young people and high school students. The quantitative survey also confirmed the effectiveness in improving three core capacities for sustainable development: Participatory capacity, connecting capacity and cognitive capacity, thereby creating a premise for replication in many other biosphere reserves, contributing to improving capacity for sustainable development for stakeholders and promoting more effective environmental management.
In addition, the task also contributes to improving the capacity of the research staff of Hanoi National University of Education, University of Natural Sciences and Institute of Natural Resources and Environment - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The research results have been concretized in many products: Report on theoretical and practical basis of PTBV in biosphere reserves; report on assessment of PTBV capacity in 3 areas; proposed solutions to improve capacity for stakeholders; built experimental models; published 1 international article, 4 domestic articles; participated in international conferences on biosphere reserves; and successfully trained 2 masters and supported the training of 2 doctoral students...
National Acceptance Assessment Council.
The members of the Acceptance Council highly appreciated the contributions of the project manager and the host agency and unanimously accepted the project as "Passed". At the same time, they requested the research team to absorb the content and make appropriate edits, complete the dossier and submit it to the Ministry of Science and Technology for a decision to recognize the results of the task.
