(CLO) A horrific murder occurred on a subway train in New York City on Sunday morning. Police said a man set fire to a woman while she was sleeping on the train, killing the victim on the spot.

The attack occurred at around 7:30 a.m. local time at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the woman, whose identity has not been released, was sitting quietly in the F train car stopped at the station when a man suddenly approached her and used a lighter to set her clothes on fire.

Police confirmed there was no interaction between the two men before the incident, and they do not believe the perpetrator and victim knew each other. The man left the train car when the fire broke out, while nearby patrol officers rushed to the scene.

“When officers arrived, they found a person engulfed in flames inside the train car,” New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference.

Officers used fire extinguishers to put out the fire, but emergency medical personnel confirmed the victim died at the scene.

The police arrested a suspect on the same day while he was traveling on another train. However, the identity of this man has not been released. Currently, the police are still investigating the victim's identity and the motive for the crime.

The New York subway, which carries about 4 million riders a day, is generally considered fairly safe, but serious violent incidents do occur. There were nine homicides on the subway system in 2024 through November, up from five in the same period in 2023, according to police data.

The murder comes after a high-profile case in early December, when a jury acquitted Daniel Penny, who was charged with negligent manslaughter in the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man who was a Michael Jackson impersonator.

The incident happened on the subway when Neely screamed and frightened passengers, Penny used a chokehold to control Neely for several minutes, leading to his death.
