What is kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer is the malignant growth of cells that form a tumor in the kidney. It is also important to note that not all kidney tumors are malignant. Some may be benign, not cancerous.

Kidney cancer is a general term. There are many different types of kidney cancer and stages of the disease. Treatment depends on the characteristics of the tumor and the expertise of the specialist.

Kidney function

The kidneys are bean-shaped organs located on either side of the back of your abdomen that filter blood to create urine. They are also important for other processes in your body, including regulating blood pressure, balancing fluids and electrolytes, producing blood cells, and keeping your bones healthy.

Causes of kidney cancer

The cause of kidney cancer is often difficult to determine. Common risk factors include smoking and obesity.

Having a first-degree relative with kidney cancer or high blood pressure is also a potential risk factor.

Signs of kidney cancer

In the early stages, kidney cancer often develops quietly, with few external symptoms, making it difficult to detect.

Therefore, many cases are only diagnosed when the disease has progressed severely. However, there are still some early warning signs that you need to pay attention to in order to promptly visit a doctor such as:

Blood in urine: This is the most common symptom. The urine may be light pink or dark red, appearing in bursts and then disappearing, making the patient easily subjective.

Lumbar pain: Dull, persistent pain, often appearing on one side of the lower back (the side with the kidney tumor), not related to movement.

Feeling a mass in the abdomen or back: In some cases, the patient may feel an unusual hard mass in the abdomen or flank.

Unusual weight loss: Rapid weight loss without changes in diet or exercise can be an early warning sign of cancer.

Feeling constantly tired: The body often feels lethargic and weak, accompanied by symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea or prolonged mild fever are also signs that need attention.

High blood pressure or anemia: Kidney cancer can disrupt hormone production in the kidneys, affecting blood pressure and red blood cell count.

The above symptoms can be confused with common kidney diseases. Therefore, when there are unusual symptoms, patients should visit specialized medical facilities and perform the necessary tests for early detection and timely treatment.
