Competing in lane 5, Huy Hoang met strong opponents from India, China, Japan, Uzbekistan, Thailand and Malaysia. With the highest confidence, Huy Hoang quickly took the lead in the race. When reaching the 400m mark, he was 1.61 seconds ahead of his direct opponent Xu Haibo (China).
In the last 100m, Huy Hoang swam almost alone before reaching the finish line first with a time of 7 minutes 57 seconds 58, winning the gold medal. This is the second gold medal of the swimmer from Quang Binh at the tournament (previously the gold medal in the 1,500m freestyle event ).
Huy Hoang won double gold medal.
Huy Hoang's achievement is still lower than the bronze medal at Asiad 19 (7 minutes 51 seconds 44). However, his stable performance is commendable.
Huy Hoang made history when he became the first Vietnamese swimmer to win two gold medals at the Asian tournament. This achievement not only affirmed the 25-year-old swimmer’s class, but also gave him more confidence to aim for the highest goal at the 33rd SEA Games and the 2026 Asian Games.
In other notable events, Nguyen Kha Nhi won silver in the women's 400m freestyle with a time of 4 minutes 25 seconds 50. The gold medal went to Japanese athlete Tanimoto (4 minutes 16 seconds 39). In the women's 200m butterfly final, Vo Thi My Tien ranked 4th with a time of 2 minutes 15 seconds 02.
