Clean agriculture from processing waste into organic fertilizer

Many types of agricultural waste and by-products such as straw, corn stalks, bagasse, fruit peels can be processed into animal feed and fertilizer. Thereby, helping to reduce production costs and optimize resource use.

Take advantage of agriculture

With a total cultivated area of over 1 million hectares in 2025, Lam Dong is a province with outstanding advantages in agricultural production in the country. Along with this advantage, Lam Dong has many successful models in utilizing agricultural by-products.

In addition to traditional processing methods, a number of agricultural by-products and wastes have been and are being utilized in many different ways. For example, pineapple leaf fiber is processed into ecological textile materials, straw is used to grow mushrooms, make animal feed and produce fertilizer. Or livestock waste is used to produce biogas. In addition, by-products from seafood processing are processed into animal feed and fertilizer...

Mr. Phan Viet Hung's family, village 1, Ham Liem commune has 1.5 hectares of apricot trees. Starting from raising fattening cows and goats, he uses animal manure combined with microorganisms to compost into organic fertilizer to water the apricot trees. Currently, because he no longer raises livestock, Mr. Hung uses microorganisms to process waste and by-products such as duckweed and sea fish to create organic fertilizer. Mr. Hung said that using organic fertilizer in this way makes the soil loose and the apricot trees grow very well. Above all, it is the economic efficiency it brings, because if using fertilizer bought on the market, the family spends about 300 million VND each year. Using agricultural by-products, the cost of fertilizer is only 1/3. Along with that, the apricot trees develop sustainably thanks to the use of organic fertilizers, ensuring environmental hygiene and increasing crop yields.

Science and technology transfer

Mr. Hung is one of many farmers in the province who have applied microbiological technology to treat the environment from agricultural waste and by-products to make organic fertilizers, bringing about efficiency. However, in reality, there is still a large amount of by-products that have not been utilized and are wasted, even causing environmental pollution such as: burning straw, not properly treating waste.

Recently, the National Agricultural Extension Center in collaboration with the Lam Dong Provincial Agricultural Extension Center organized a training course on "Techniques for applying microbiological technology to treat the environment from waste by-products to make organic fertilizers". Many farmers, farm owners, and cooperative members in the Southeast region of the province attended. Thereby, farmers were informed about the application of microbiological organic fertilizers in agricultural production; skills in building a model for treating waste by-products to make organic fertilizers.

According to the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, recycling agricultural by-products into organic fertilizer is a sustainable solution, helping to improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and promote circular agriculture. Methods such as composting, using earthworms, and applying biological products can all be applied.

According to MSc. Le Van Dac - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture Extension, Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, Lam Dong has strengths in agriculture, so utilizing agricultural by-products is an advantage. In the coming time, reuse in circular agricultural production and organic agriculture is the direction of the provincial agricultural sector. Therefore, to utilize by-products as organic fertilizer for crops and increase productivity, farmers need to use microorganisms. Thereby, contributing to saving fertilizer, increasing economic efficiency, and developing stable agriculture. Currently, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has been implementing models and projects related to clean agriculture from processing waste and by-products as organic fertilizers in localities. At the same time, continue to promote training and transfer of science and technology.
