On October 10, the Argentine government announced that OpenAI and Sur Energy had signed a letter of intent to cooperate in building a large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center in the Patagonia region, with a total investment expected to reach 25 billion USD.
The project, dubbed “Stargate Argentina,” will be implemented within the framework of the South American country’s Major Investment Incentive Program (RIGI) and is considered one of the largest energy-technology initiatives in Argentina’s history.
The project includes the construction of an infrastructure system with a maximum capacity of 500 megawatts, serving to make Argentina the leading AI center in South America.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, a leading company in the field of AI, famous for the ChatGPT application, affirmed that choosing Argentina was a “strategic decision” thanks to the geopolitical stability and huge potential for renewable energy of this South American country.
Phase one of the project is expected to start construction in 2026, with an investment capital of about 7-10 billion USD.
Sur Energy, a clean energy company founded by two Argentine investors in the US, will provide financing and partner with Argentine energy suppliers to build the project and develop an international cloud computing solution.
For its part, OpenAI has committed to purchasing all the computing power generated by the data center, helping to ensure the economic efficiency and financial viability of the project, even though OpenAI does not directly invest in its construction.
Stargate Argentina combines the country's renewable energy strengths with world-class AI infrastructure, creating high-quality jobs and attracting international investment, according to Sur Energy co-founder Emiliano Kargieman.
The government of President Javier Milei sees the project as a demonstration of the confidence of leading technology corporations in Argentina as a “sustainable innovation hub of South America.”
When completed, Stargate Argentina will be the largest data center in the region and part of OpenAI's global strategy, which plans to invest up to $500 billion over the next decade to develop AI infrastructure globally./.
