Student Management via Facebook

In a survey, the Department of Education and Training of Ngu Hanh Son District (Da Nang City) has recorded that about 50%-60% of students in the district use Facebook. Therefore, the Department of Education and Training of Ngu Hanh Son District has organized training for teachers in the whole district to use Facebook to manage students.

This work has been deployed to each school and homeroom teachers will be responsible for monitoring students via Facebook to prevent unnecessary negativity and promote the strengths of this social networking site in teaching and learning.

Mr. Tran Van Hong, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ngu Hanh Son District, said that students today are exposed to information technology very early and especially participate in social networking sites and online games. "The impact of online games is very clear, but the fact that many students use social networks for the wrong purposes, causing unfortunate things, needs to be strictly managed," said Mr. Hong. According to Mr. Hong, the education sector cannot ban students from using social networks and online games because outside of school hours, students still have time at home. Therefore, it is necessary to equip teachers to use and manage students via Facebook because many teachers have not yet joined Facebook.

According to Mr. Tran Tan, Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School (Ngu Hanh Son District), without close supervision from teachers, students will have many problems when using social networks. Managing students via Facebook will help teachers and schools have more channels to monitor students. Teachers must quickly approach this method and must consider it as a task, profession and the newest pedagogical skill.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hiep, Vice Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School, said that the school has promoted to homeroom teachers and subjects how to educate students via Facebook and set up a separate consulting group to have positive orientations. Mr. Hiep said that managing students via Facebook will be combined with professional exchanges, study, creating conditions for students in the school to communicate and learn. The school has set up groups for each subject such as math, foreign languages, etc. so that students can ask questions, raise concerns and teachers or better students will answer and discuss. In addition, the school also guides teachers to guide students to use standard Vietnamese language when participating in Facebook. If students use language with incorrect spelling, teachers must correct them immediately to help them avoid language deviations.

Teacher Le Thi Kim Van, a teacher at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School, said that after a period of implementing student management via Facebook, it has brought about many positive results. “Teachers and students can understand each other better. Any psychological changes in students will also be detected promptly and resolved early. Homeroom class activities are not as monotonous as before, but there are more things to discuss,” said Ms. Van.
