The Australia-Vietnam Strategic Technology Hub is a new initiative to advance 5G/6G, cyber security and digital transformation research. It will bring together the best experts from academia, industry and government to address the challenges and opportunities of the digital future.

On June 11, at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT), the Australia-Vietnam Strategic Technology Center (AVSTC) was officially opened to promote strategic technology cooperation and innovation between Australia and Vietnam.

Attending the opening ceremony were Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird and more than 300 delegates representing government agencies, research institutes, universities and businesses.

This groundbreaking collaboration project between Australia and Vietnam is being implemented through a partnership between PTIT and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

The Center will provide a dynamic platform to launch innovative activities, promote outstanding research, support policy formulation and practical applications of emerging and critical technologies such as 5G/6G, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and cybersecurity.

At the event, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy emphasized the importance of developing technology and future innovation. This event marked a turning point in the strategic cooperation relationship between the two countries, especially in the field of technology - a key driving force for economic development, competitiveness and innovation in the 21st century.

Deputy Minister Bui The Duy said that over the years, the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and Australia have had a close partnership in science, technology and innovation, focusing on digital transformation and strategic technology.

“The launch of the Center is an important step to strengthen cooperation between Australia and Vietnam in strategic technologies, promote digital transformation, promote technological and industrial innovation, and enhance international network stability as a core driver of sustainable development,” Deputy Minister Bui The Duy shared.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Gillian Bird said, “Australia is proud to partner with Vietnam to promote innovation and digital transformation, two essential elements for Vietnam’s economic growth. This is a concrete demonstration of Australia’s commitment to supporting science and innovation within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.”

By promoting research and cooperation on strategic technologies, as well as through connecting Vietnamese institutions with Australia’s leading education and innovation network, Australia aims to support Vietnam in implementing Resolution 57 with practical, measurable results.

The Centre marks an important milestone in Australia and Vietnam’s shared journey towards a secure and digitally connected future, and reflects the deep and ongoing commitment between the two countries under the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Digital technology and digital trade are key to promoting economic growth, development, and social welfare, including support for women entrepreneurs. This is reflected in the Strategy for Enhancing Economic Cooperation between the two countries.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has provided initial funding of AUD 2.1 million to set up the Centre, with global telecommunications company Nokia providing technical equipment to support operations.
