Giant AI robots help maintain airplanes

Norwegian AI Robots created by Avinxt could revolutionize de-icing, machine maintenance and technical inspections for aircraft.

Norse Atlantic Airways has partnered with Avinxt to use its giant robots, which use green technology and artificial intelligence, to perform functions such as de-icing, cleaning, and even wiping down machinery, Interesting Engineering reported on November 27. Regular exterior cleaning not only makes the aircraft more recognizable, but also helps reduce air resistance, saving up to 2% of fuel consumption.

Avinxt will start building robots in 2024 that can handle large passenger planes, small private planes, and even military aircraft. Avinxt's robots will use cameras and AI to inspect the condition of the plane. In seven hours, the robot can scan the plane for any rough spots and bumps and accurately inspect the airframe. Previously, this process would take weeks.

“The solution from Avinxt is one of the few innovations that can help us reduce carbon emissions while lowering costs,” said Thom-Arne Norheim, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways.

The first Avinxt robots will be built at Oslo Airport, with the company planning to introduce a second batch at London Gatwick Airport later.

The specialized fluid used to de-ice and clean aircraft can be harmful to the environment. Many airports do not have adequate means to collect and recycle this fluid, leading to contamination of the ground and water around the airport. Avinxt is planning to set up a facility at the airport to collect and recycle the fluid. Their facility will treat more than 80% of the water and chemicals used in the process.
