According to General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian offensive in 2025 has failed. According to the head of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) have not accomplished any of the tasks assigned to them. “It can be said that the Russian spring-summer offensive has been effectively broken,” General Syrskyi noted, adding that the current front line stretches 1,250 kilometers, with about 712,000 Russian servicemen involved in the fighting.
“Russia's plan to create a security buffer zone (as declared by Moscow) in the Sumy and Kharkov border regions in the north and northeast, and to gain control over the city of Pokrovsk and the entire Donetsk region has failed,” British news agency Reuters quoted General Syrskyi as saying. Assessing the successes of the AFU, General Syrskyi recalled that in the past two months alone, the AFU has struck 85 military or defense-industrial targets on Russian territory, including air bases, warehouses and weapons factories. According to General Syrskyi, the RFAF General Staff is preparing a new offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region, with the intention of breaking deep into Ukrainian territory. However, the AFU has actively prevented all plans of the Russian army and currently the RFAF lacks the manpower and resources to advance into this area. “We actively prevented an enemy attack in the direction of Novopavlovskoye. The enemy was trying to advance deeper into the territory using the ‘thousand cuts’ tactic, and the RFAF had only one goal: to declare its presence and plant a flag on a building in a densely populated area,” General Syrskyi told reporters. According to General Syrskyi, after the AFU “destroyed” the RFAF’s front-line units, the Russian army lacked the numbers and resources for a “decisive attack”. Even if Moscow had called in reserves from the Sumy or Kharkov regions, they would not have been of any help.
But Reuters also reviewed the RFAF’s results. Specifically, while General Syrskyi was giving an interview, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a large-scale RFAF offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region, confirming full control of Yunakivka, an important AFU logistics center in the Sumy region. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian troops in Novopavlivske and other areas reported daily advances by Russian units, without any “counter-attacks” by the AFU, which were allegedly “planned”. This was true across the entire front line in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Obviously, there was a certain “discrepancy” between the Ukrainian troops on the front line and General Syrskyi’s information. As for Pokrovsk, which General Syrskyi mentioned, the RFAF has also achieved significant successes in this area, effectively cutting off the enemy's logistics. It should be added that even Kiev now admits that the AFU is facing a serious shortage of personnel, as a result of high casualties and mass desertions of soldiers and officers. Rybar channel reported on September 26 that paratroopers of the RFAF Northern Group of Forces have taken full control of the village of Yunakivka in Sumy province, northern Ukraine. The reason is that the RFAF has withdrawn its troops here to reinforce the Pokrovsk front, making it difficult for the Ukrainian army to resist. The border village of Yunakivka served as the AFU's main logistics hub during the incursion into Russia's Kursk region in the summer of 2024. Taking control of the village is a major and important step in establishing a security zone near the Russian border.
The fighting for the town has been fierce for months, with the village changing hands repeatedly. Even after losing control of a significant part of Yunakivka, the Ukrainians are sure to continue their efforts to regain lost positions. However, the lack of numbers and the high combat capabilities of the Russian paratroopers have prevented the AFU’s plans from coming to fruition. It is worth noting that in recent weeks, Ukrainian media, especially AFU, have frequently reported on the "stabilization of the situation" in the Sumy region, claiming that Ukrainian troops have pushed Russian troops out of a number of key positions, which they had captured from May to July this year. However, the redeployment of AFU reserves to the Pokrovsk front in Donetsk has not significantly changed the situation around this key Ukrainian stronghold in Donbass. According to Ukrainian military experts, AFU lost at least 10,000 troops in preventing the RFAF from breaking through north of Pokrovsk.
According to the Russian Military Review, the Ukrainian troops defending the Sumy region have been without food for more than a week. They noted that Russian airstrikes destroyed the food depots of the 425th Assault Regiment and the 47th Magura Motorized Infantry Brigade. Currently, the Ukrainian side has not been able to organize food supplies for these units. (photo source: Military Review, Ukrinform, Kyiv Post).
