Insecurity in the residential area new
K'No 5 residential area (Dam Rong 4 commune) was built to provide a stable place for people in the local disaster area, but is now facing the fear of increasingly serious landslides.
After prolonged heavy rains, especially due to the impact of storm No. 3 in 2025, many slopes behind houses collapsed and slid, causing damage and directly threatening people's lives and property.
Ms. Lieng Krang K'Hoa, one of the households that moved to this resettlement area in 2021, shared: “For the past two years, cracks have continuously appeared in the area behind my house, and the land has gradually subsided. Every time it rains heavily, my whole family is worried. We just hope that the Government will soon have a solution and support to reinforce the area behind the house. The rainy season is still long, so people are extremely worried.”

Not only Ms. K'Hoa's family, Mr. Ko Dong Ha Bal, who experienced landslides in Lan Tranh village, could not hide his anxiety.
After being mobilized to relocate to the K'No 5 resettlement area, his family received 50 million VND from the State to build a house and thought they had escaped danger. But then, the place called "safe zone" is showing signs of decline.

For the past two years, the hill behind my house has been collapsing. Now, the soil has reached the kitchen. Every time I hear the rain, I worry about how long the earthen roof can hold up.
Mr. K'Dông Ha Bal, a resident of K'No 5 Resettlement Area

The landslide situation in K'No 5 residential area is no longer a problem of just one household. Actual records show that most of the houses are built on high embankments, without a proper drainage system. When it rains heavily, rainwater from the roofs flows to the foot of the slope, causing the soil to quickly become soft and collapse.
The case of Mr. Ha Lan’s family is typical. The solid house built with the hope of escaping the “landslide” is now facing the risk of collapsing at any time.
“The land behind my house is soggy, with many long cracks. Every night when it rains, I just pray for the rain to stop soon,” Mr. Lan shared anxiously.

When the goal of settling down has not yet come true, the people here once again face the fear of natural disasters. This reality shows that, besides the impact of extreme weather, there are still shortcomings in planning and construction techniques of housing in mountainous resettlement areas - where the terrain is steep, the ground is weak and prone to landslides if there are no synchronous reinforcement measures.

Need for fundamental and protective solutions soon ensure the safety of residents
According to the Lac Duong Area Construction Investment Project Management Board, after storm No. 3 in 2025, the embankment area behind the K'No 5 residential area suffered serious landslides.
Preliminary statistics show that 5 households were directly affected; many outbuildings were swept away, the total length of the landslide was about 80m, the volume of soil slid was nearly 200m³. In addition, 4 other households showed signs of slight subsidence.
The K'No 5 Residential Area Project was implemented on an area of 15 hectares, with a total investment of 38 billion VND, aiming to relocate people in high-risk areas to safe places and stabilize their livelihoods. In phase 1 (2018 - 2020), the unit completed construction items and handed over residential land areas to 73 households.

Phase 2, approved by Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee in Decision 1061/QD-UBND dated May 30, 2023, with a total investment of VND 23.88 billion, is being implemented with items of leveling, traffic, drainage, electricity - water supply and lighting.

“The landslide area is within the scope of phase 1 of the project to stabilize the population in the extremely difficult area of K'No 5 village, Dung K'No commune (old), now Dam Rong 4 commune.
Currently, the unit is coordinating with the locality to review and propose to the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee to soon have a solution to ensure the safety of people's lives and property" - Mr. Cuong said.

According to Mr. Tran Xuan Cuong, the residential area is located on a steep hill, the ground is mainly filled with earth. When heavy rains last for a long time, the soil absorbs water, becomes weak and easily slides.
Currently, the unit has worked with local authorities to inspect, delineate dangerous areas, put up warning signs and mobilize people to temporarily evacuate to a safe place.

In the immediate future, the Project Management Board and the commune authorities have proposed to urgently relocate 9 households; of which, 5 households are directly affected. At the same time, the authorities need to urgently survey, design and estimate a plan to handle landslides, reinforce the ground and the overall drainage system for the entire resettlement area.
The residential area of Dung K'no 5 in Dam Rong 4 commune suffered a serious landslide that directly affected 15 households. To ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the People's Committee of Dam Rong 4 commune directed the militia and self-defense forces, the commune police and local people to organize the evacuation of households to safe temporary shelters at relatives' houses for temporary residence.
The People's Committee of Dam Rong 4 commune also proposed the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Provincial People's Committee to support 5 billion VND from the flood and storm prevention fund or other sources to build stone-gabion embankments, build drainage ditches in the area and cover the slopes in the landslide areas to ensure safety for the people.
