From the 2024 Paris Olympics…

The biggest playground for Vietnamese sports in 2024 is the Paris Olympics. In the number 1 tournament on the planet, in terms of quality, the Vietnamese athletes competing do not have any face that is guaranteed to be in the medal group.

Trinh Thu Vinh was considered the athlete with the highest chance, but narrowly missed out on the bronze medal. The People's Public Security shooter's two appearances in the finals was the brightest spot of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the Olympics.

Trinh Thu Vinh had the most successful competition at the 2024 Olympics.

After the miracle of Hoang Xuan Vinh at the 2016 Olympics, Vietnam went through two consecutive Olympics empty-handed. This may be an unhappy result for fans, but it reflects the reality of the development of Vietnamese sports.

The story of Vietnam’s lack of medals at the 2024 Olympics needs to be looked at comprehensively, thereby drawing lessons for the future. Continuing to invest in key areas and finding key sports that can win medals at the Olympics must be given top priority.

Aim for the top spot in the SEA Games and beyond

According to the report of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, Vietnamese athletes won a total of 1,365 international medals in high-performance sports, including 542 gold medals, 406 silver medals and 417 bronze medals.

The number of medals won by Vietnamese sports in 2025 is predicted to increase after the 33rd SEA Games, with the goal of winning over 90 gold medals. The sports industry affirms that this is a pivotal year for investment strategies towards key and spearhead sports.

On October 15, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1189/QD-TTg approving the Strategy for Development of Physical Training and Sports in Vietnam to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Vietnamese sports determined to reach regional level.

Notably, from now until 2030, Vietnamese sports will regularly maintain their position in the top 3 leading delegations at the SEA Games and in the top 20 leading delegations at the Asian Games; with medals at the Olympics and Paralympics.

By 2045, maintain a position in the top two teams at the SEA Games, in the top 15 teams at the Asian Games, and in the top 50 teams at the Olympics.

Thus, in addition to the goal of being in the leading group of SEA Games, Vietnamese sports must achieve achievements in the continental and Olympic arenas.

Director Dang Ha Viet said that 2025 still has many challenges and difficulties, but the sports industry is determined to complete well the assigned tasks in both management, operation and professional work.

There are 17 sports that will receive key investment from 2025, including: swimming, shooting, archery, boxing, badminton, weightlifting, athletics, rowing, fencing, gymnastics, taekwondo, cycling, judo, wrestling (Olympic sports) and wushu, sepak takraw, karate (Asiad sports).

These sports not only affirm their leading position at the SEA Games at the end of this year, but also serve as a development direction and medal competition in major tournaments such as the Asiad or Olympics.
