Promoting cooperation with Phuket province, Thailand

From July 31 to August 1, Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Pham Viet Hung visited and worked in Phuket province, Thailand. Commercial Counselor Le Huu Phuc, Science and Technology Counselor Tran Thi Hue, Counselor Du Thanh Hung and a number of Embassy officials attended the activities.

At a meeting with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat on the afternoon of July 31 with the participation of representatives from several provincial agencies and the Vietnamese community, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung emphasized the importance of upgrading the Vietnam-Thailand relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening up opportunities for deeper cooperation between the two countries, including relations between localities of Vietnam and Phuket.

The Ambassador highly appreciated Phuket's achievements in tourism development, suggested that the province pay attention to establishing cooperative relations with Vietnamese localities, including An Giang province; thanked and hoped that Phuket province would continue to create favorable conditions for the Thai community of Vietnamese origin to live in the locality; and support Vietnamese airlines when opening flights to Phuket to enhance tourism and trade connections.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat expressed his impression of Vietnam's socio -economic development; informed that there are nearly 1,000 Vietnamese people (including Thais of Vietnamese origin) living in Phuket and making positive contributions to the local development; agreed to consider the possibility of promoting cooperation with suitable localities in Vietnam; and supported the opening of a direct flight connecting Phuket with Vietnam.

During his visit to Phuket province, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung had meetings with representatives of the Vietnamese community in Phuket and representatives of the Thai-Vietnamese Business Association of Phuket province.

At the meetings, the Ambassador informed the people about the country's socio-economic development situation and the major decisions of the Party and State leaders to achieve major development goals; acknowledged the people's hearts always turned towards their homeland; hoped that the people would always preserve and promote the nation's traditions and culture, unite, help each other and comply with the law when doing business and living in the locality, contributing to promoting the local development as well as the relationship between Vietnam and Thailand.

Excited to welcome the Ambassador and the delegation, Mr. Duong Xuan Son, Chairman of the Thai-Vietnamese Association and Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Thai-Vietnamese Business Association of Phuket province emphasized that overseas Vietnamese in Phuket are very united, wholeheartedly helping each other and looking towards their homeland, expressing their interest and trust in the country's development policies of the Party and State in general; said that there are currently 150 overseas Vietnamese families with a total of more than 600 people, most of whom are in the tourism business, with quite stable economic conditions.

During the visit, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung also visited and worked with General Director of Phuket International Airport Monchai Tanode. Both sides agreed that Phuket province and Vietnamese localities have great potential to develop bilateral cooperation in many fields, especially tourism.

Ambassador Pham Viet Hung requested Phuket International Airport to pay attention and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese airlines when they have flights to Phuket. Also attending the meeting was Head of Vietnam Airlines branch in Thailand Ngo Tri Hung.

In Phuket, Ambassador Pham Viet Hung also had a working session with Chairman of the Phuket Tourism Association Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, representatives of the Hotel Association and representatives of the Phuket Provincial Industry Federation.
