That's what's happening at the Arctic Open 2025, a BWF Super 500 tournament taking place in Finland.
This is considered one of the major tournaments of the top badminton world at the end of the year, and is also an opportunity for top players to "sprint" to earn points to reach the World Tour Finals.
Although China did not send many strong players to this tournament, mainland badminton fans were still disappointed with the performance of their domestic players.
In the men's singles, 26-year-old Weng Hong Yang received the highest expectations from Chinese fans. He was seeded fourth in the tournament.
But in the first round, Weng caused a heavy disappointment when he lost to Singaporean opponent Jason Teh.

In the women's singles, all Chinese players had to stop early. The biggest disappointment was Gao Fang Jie, the third seed of the tournament.
Gao Fang Jie faced Danish player Amalie Schulz in the second round, and had to accept defeat with a score of 1-2 (18-21, 21-18, 16-21). In the other bracket, her compatriot Han Qian Xi also lost quickly to Blichfeldt after 2 sets.
This defeat left China completely out of the quarterfinals in the women's singles. In the men's singles, they only had the 8th seed Lu Guang Zu make it to the quarterfinals.
This is a disappointing result for the Chinese badminton community, showing that their power in singles events is really being shaken.
At the most recent Super 500 tournament, the Korea Open, which took place in September, the men's and women's singles finals were also completely devoid of Chinese players.
