Wreckage of helicopter crash in Texas

A UH-72 Lakota helicopter crashed near Rio Grande City, Texas, at around 2:50 p.m. local time on March 8. A total of four people were on board, three were killed and one was injured.

Reuters quoted Major Ryan Wierzbicki, spokesman for the Joint Task Force North, as saying that the helicopter was on a "surveillance and detection" mission to detect any unusual movements on the US-Mexico border.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Major Wierzbicki said there was no information yet on weather conditions at the time of the crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the helicopter was not involved in "Operation Lone Star," a border security effort ordered by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in 2021.

This is the latest helicopter crash since Lieutenant General Jon Jensen, commander of the US Army National Guard, ordered the grounding of all helicopters in the unit to review policies and procedures related to flight safety, according to The Hill newspaper on February 27.

The order was issued after a Mississippi National Guard Apache helicopter crashed on February 23, killing both pilots. On February 12, a Utah National Guard Apache helicopter crashed, with both pilots surviving.
