On September 20, Mr. Trump gave a speech to supporters in Iowa and described the record high level of illegal border crossings at the US-Mexico border as an "invasion," according to Reuters.

Former President Donald Trump campaigned in Dubuque, Iowa on September 20.

"On my inauguration, I will immediately end the Biden administration's open border policies. I will make clear that we must use any and all resources necessary to stop this invasion, including bringing home thousands of our troops currently stationed overseas," Trump said. The majority of those attempting to cross the southern border of the United States come from Central America.

In addition, former President Trump also announced that he would expand the travel ban he issued while in office (2017-2021) to prevent people from many countries with a majority of Muslim residents from coming to the US.

Mr Trump's Republican rivals have recently increased their focus on immigration policy, promising tough action on border crossings.

President Joe Biden's administration has defended its border policies and said it is using every tool at its disposal. The White House has also called on Congress to pass legislation to fix the system.

Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate, said that if elected, he would send troops to the border and authorize the use of deadly force against members of drug cartels.

About 1 in 6 Republicans consider immigration the most pressing issue facing the United States, behind only the economy and crime, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll in September.

Currently, Mr. Trump is the leading candidate for the Republican Party's nomination for the 2024 US presidential election. The Republican primary in Iowa will take place in January 2024. Although he is the biggest rival, Mr. DeSantis is far behind Mr. Trump by about 40 percentage points in polls.
