The bus was attacked by rioters on Thursday, state broadcaster CCTV said, amid violence that has gripped French cities since the police shooting of a teenager of North African origin. The Chinese tourists have since left France, the consulate said in a statement.

The consulate's statement added that Chinese citizens in France or about to visit France should "strengthen precautions" and "be more vigilant and cautious" in light of the riots that have swept across the country in recent days.

Rioting across France appeared to be less intense on Saturday, as tens of thousands of police were deployed in cities across the country, from Paris, Nice, Strasbourg to Marseille.
