Since September 30, when the heavy rain lasted for more than 10 hours due to storm No. 10 pouring down on Hanoi and the northern provinces, Tay Mo Primary School has been preparing to enter the 10th consecutive day of closing its school gate.

Last weekend was sunny and the water receded, parents and teachers worked together to clean up the mud, but before the students could return, the rain from the aftermath of storm No. 11 poured down again. Trash, mud, and sand flooded back as before. The water rose to the first floor, turning the school yard into a river.

Ms. Nguyen Thi An (To residential group, Tay Mo ward) said that on the afternoon of September 30, the water rose very quickly, the school yard was flooded more than 1 meter deep, even into the classrooms. The school had to mobilize boats to transport students out.

From October 1, more than 2,000 students in the whole school switched to online learning.

"For the past 9 days, the children have been at home. During the day, the teacher assigns homework, and the parents print it out for the children to do themselves. In the evening, when the parents are home, the children study online with the teacher for about an hour.

Because the children are still young and it rains continuously, it is really unsafe to let them use electrical appliances at home. The fact that the school only organizes online classes in the evening is supported by many parents," said Ms. An.

According to Ms. An, the students' 1-hour evening study time includes learning new knowledge, correcting homework and some interactive activities. "My child really looks forward to class time to talk with friends and the homeroom teacher," Ms. An shared.

Ms. An was among the parents who came to the school to clean up the flood last weekend. The flood on September 30th caused significant damage to the school because it was not able to move tables, chairs, and furniture on the first floor in time. The flood on October 7th was even deeper, with the water level at times rising to the gate. "The school has never been flooded this deeply," Ms. An said.

This is the third time the school has been flooded in the past 1.5 months. Previously, at the end of August, rain from storm No. 5 also caused the school to be deeply flooded right before the opening day of school.

On the evening of October 9, Tay Mo Primary School sent out a notice to parents that all students would continue to be off school tomorrow, October 10. The school is still flooded, the water has not receded completely. Some students and teachers also live in deeply flooded areas of Tay Mo ward, making daily life and travel very difficult.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Dang Van Tien - Head of Tay Mo Ward's Cultural Department - said that this morning, the ward mobilized the support of the Youth Union, Women's Union, and Ward Military to go to the school with parents, teachers, and staff to carry out a general cleaning.

It is expected that this afternoon, the ward health station will spray disinfectant throughout the school. If the weather is favorable, the school will welcome students back next Monday, October 13.
