Russia-Ukraine War January 6: Ukraine's counterattack failed at Kursk when not only was the AFU's counterattack blocked, but Russia also attacked Ukraine's rear.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have launched a large-scale counteroffensive in the Kursk region. According to the Russian Defense Ministry , the enemy has advanced towards the Berdin farm in the Bolshesoldatsky district.

The Ukrainian army launched the attack at around 9 a.m. on January 5. With the support of two tanks, an engineering vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles (AFVs), the AFU hoped to stop the Russian advance toward Kursk.

Artillery and tactical aviation of the Northern Task Force defeated the AFU strike group. The Russian troops destroyed all enemy tanks and 7 armored fighting vehicles that participated in the attack.

During the offensive, units of the Northern Army Group defeated a formation of four motorized brigades and the number of airborne brigades of the AFU, a marine brigade and territorial defense. The enemy was repelled in the areas of 15 settlements, including Daryino, Leonidovo, Malaya Loknya and Sudzha.

AFU losses in the Kursk area amounted to nearly 50,000 soldiers.

Since the attack on the Kursk region, the AFU has lost nearly 50,000 soldiers in combat. The enemy also lost 73 tanks, 209 infantry fighting vehicles, 153 armored personnel carriers, 1,461 armored infantry fighting vehicles, 340 guns and 44 multiple rocket launchers (13 Himars, 6 MLRS).

According to estimates by the TASS news agency, since the start of the Special Military Operation, the AFU has lost more than a million servicemen.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, in 2022, Ukraine's losses will reach 118,500 people, in 2023 they will be 405,400 people. In 2024, they will be about 595,000 soldiers.

Russia issues "ultimatum" at Velyka Novosilka

Ukrainian President Volodimyr Zelensky has begun preparations for the Ramstein conference, the Military Summary channel reported. An assessment of Ukraine's mobilization capabilities is underway.

The U.S.-led Ukraine Defense Contact Group, also known as the "Ramstein Conference," includes more than 50 countries, including all 31 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), most European Union (EU) countries, and allies from Africa, Asia, and South America. The Ukraine Defense Contact Group, based at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, meets regularly to coordinate military aid to Ukraine.

Ahead of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, the AFU has conducted limited offensive operations.

Velyka Novosilka now appears to be completely surrounded, as after several days of no information, a video has emerged in which Ukrainian soldiers in the village are ordered to surrender over loudspeakers.

In the direction of Pokrovsk, the Russians also began to attack the towns from the east. They were getting closer and closer to the H32 route connecting Pokrovsk with Kostiantynivka and from the western flank in the direction of Kotlyne.

Russia attacks and "crushes" Ukraine's counterattack at Kursk

In the Korenevsky district, after taking control of the village of Kruglen'koye, the Russian army continued to move towards the settlement of Malaya Loknya. However, the Ukrainian defense line in the area was quite strong. The Russian side took a long time before bringing in ground forces.

Further south, in the Sudzha area, Russian units attacked from the village of Russkaya Konopelka and advanced very close to the outskirts of the city near the village of Bondarevka. As in the Malaya Loknya area, the Russian attacks required a lot of supporting fire.

The Russian military also achieved another very important result. By capturing the village of Kurilovka, Russian unmanned aerial vehicles effectively blocked the supply route for the AFU in the Kursk region.

The main AFU supply route is 38K-004, about 8 km from Kurilovka. This is the range of the fiber-optic drones, which cannot be jammed. It would be difficult for the AFU to cross this route easily and safely.

At the same time, the Russian army is gaining more tactically advantageous positions and launching an offensive aimed at knocking out the AFU’s positions preparing for a counter-offensive from the north. An attack south of Sudzha also raises questions about Ukraine’s ability to continue its counter-offensive in the region.
