The Ukrainian delegation led by Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, held the fourth round of talks with the US on a future bilateral security agreement, the Kyiv Independent newspaper reported, citing a source in the Office of the President of Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian newspaper, more than 30 countries have joined the G7 Joint Statement in support of Ukraine so far. Specifically, the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland and Latvia have signed bilateral agreements with Kiev.

Ukraine is preparing bilateral security agreements with seven more countries, including the United States, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

According to Mr. Zelensky, Ukraine and the United States began negotiations on a bilateral security cooperation agreement on April 22, a few days after the US House of Representatives approved a foreign aid package that included $61 billion for Kiev. So far, four rounds of such negotiations have been held.

In the latest round of talks on May 6, Kiev and Washington discussed the “most basic” provisions, the wording of some issues and made “clear progress” in agreeing on the content of the document, Mr. Yermak informed.

“We need to speed up the process of completing the bilateral security agreement this month,” said an official close to President Zelensky.

G7 members presented their plan for long-term security commitments to Ukraine at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in early July last year.

Under the plan, each country would provide bilateral assistance to help Kiev repel Russian forces and prevent any future conflicts.

Security guarantees would entail clear and long-term obligations and would strengthen Ukraine’s ability to fight a conflict with Russia. They would also include sanctions, financial assistance and post-war reconstruction .
