On October 6, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, in his capacity as the designated Chair of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), chaired the first informal meeting with the Treaty's member States, to discuss the orientation, priorities and consultation process in preparation for the NPT Review Conference scheduled to take place in April 2026.
The meeting was attended and delivered speeches by a large number of representatives of NPT member states, regional groups and relevant international organizations. Delegates congratulated Vietnam on being selected to assume the role of Chair of the NPT Review Conference in the context of an increasingly complex international security and geopolitical environment, affirming their confidence in Vietnam’s prestige and capacity in promoting dialogue, coordinating negotiations and promoting consensus.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Do Hung Viet emphasized that taking on the position of Chairman of the NPT Review Conference is an important responsibility, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment to the NPT process in particular and efforts to disarmament and combat nuclear weapons proliferation in general.
The Ambassador said that the current difficult international context poses many challenges, but also opens up opportunities to promote cooperation in this extremely important field. The Head of the Vietnamese Delegation called on countries to promote the spirit of construction, cooperation, compromise and creativity, towards a successful and substantive review.
Affirming the principle of balanced and transparent work, ensuring listening to and respecting the opinions of all member countries, Ambassador Do Hung Viet hopes that countries will cooperate to strengthen global disarmament and anti-proliferation institutions, demonstrating the highest political responsibility and determination, contributing to reducing and moving towards the complete elimination of this type of weapon of mass destruction.
At the meeting, representatives of the countries shared their views on the priorities for the upcoming Review, on all three pillars of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and expressed their wish to continue close consultations with the Chairman and Ambassador Do Hung Viet in the coming time to aim for a positive outcome at the Conference.
Some countries stressed the need to focus on discussing practical measures to improve the effectiveness of discussions at the Conference, enhance transparency and responsibility in implementing nuclear disarmament obligations, and encourage substantive dialogue between the parties, in order to effectively implement the Treaty.
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), adopted in 1968 and entered into force in 1970, is the foundation of the global system of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy. The NPT Review Conference is held every five years to assess the implementation of the Treaty and discuss the steps for its implementation in the coming period. The 11th Conference is scheduled to take place in New York in 2026, with the important task of restoring consensus and strengthening efforts and commitments to implement obligations under the NPT in the context of unpredictable changes in international security. |
