COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry agency that coordinates civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, said it would continue to review the security situation to decide whether to keep the crossing open. However, it is likely that the Erez crossing will be temporarily closed again on September 29 and 30, as Israeli authorities do every year during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
The Erez border crossing was closed after violent protests by Gaza residents, just before the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur holidays. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant affirmed that the crackdown on violence at the border with Gaza would continue.
The Gaza Strip, home to some 2.3 million Palestinians, has been rocked by violent protests over the past two weeks. Protesters have burned tires, hurled stones and petrol bombs at Israeli troops, who have responded with tear gas and live ammunition.
According to figures from Hamas' Health Ministry , since September 13, seven Palestinians have been killed and more than 100 injured in violence in Gaza.
At the same time, the Israeli army used drones to attack military sites of the Islamic group Hamas - the group that controls this land. In May, Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip killed 34 Palestinians and 1 Israeli.
