An Duong overcomes the situation of abandoned fields

Five years ago, the Ruong field area of Quynh Minh residential group was a low-lying field with weeds growing wildly, taller than a person. Since June 2021, with the encouragement of the Party Committee and local authorities, Mr. Bui Xuan Son, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Quynh Minh Residential Group, has accepted to renovate more than 25 hectares of land in the field to grow organic rice.

Mr. Son said that to implement the model, he built a plan to consolidate land plots, went to each household to ask for opinions and mobilize them to lease their fields. After the households agreed to lend their fields, he started the process of weeding, improving the soil, digging and rebuilding canals, ditches, and roads within the fields.

After completing land improvement, his family planted crops and mechanized all production stages from land preparation, sowing, pesticide spraying to harvesting and transportation.

Up to now, after nearly 5 years of implementation, the cultivated area in Ruong field has reached 31 hectares. On this area, Mr. Son divided it into many areas to grow different types of rice such as: Thai Binh sticky rice, BC 15, ST 25... The organic rice growing model is certified by VietGAP and has a regional code, and has a stable consumption market.

Similar to Ruong field and Long Vong field, Nhat Tri village is a low-lying area, difficult to cultivate. Most of the cultivated area is abandoned. However, recently, many people have boldly invested in building production models, contributing to overcoming the situation of abandoned fields.

Since the end of 2024, Mr. Truong Duc Doanh's family in Nhat Tri village has rented part of the land area from local households to convert into a fish pond and build a chicken farm. Although there are still many difficulties such as the road to the area has not been solidified and there is no stable electricity, his family is determined to implement the model. In this area, there is also a model of growing lotus for tubers on an area of 12 hectares, which initially brings high economic efficiency.

According to information from the Farmers' Association of An Duong Ward, not only the above models, from the conversion of crop structure, in the ward there have appeared many other production models that bring high economic efficiency such as the high-quality flower growing model of May Sanh Flower Cooperative; growing ornamental flowers; livestock farms meeting VietGAP standards... contributing to solving the problem of abandoned agricultural land in the ward.

Promote crop restructuring

According to the initial statistics of the Farmers' Association of An Duong Ward, the ward has about 200 hectares of abandoned agricultural land. Through propaganda and mobilization work, households in the ward have resumed farming and recovered about 40 hectares.

However, overcoming the situation of abandoned fields in the area is still difficult. The main reasons are due to abnormal weather, pests and diseases affecting crop productivity; lack of labor in agricultural production; production conditions in some areas are limited in terms of water and electricity sources for production...

In addition, a number of farmers still have the mentality of keeping land, causing many households to want to expand their production scale but cannot rent or borrow land. Meanwhile, changing the crop structure requires a long time, making people hesitant to invest because they are worried about not being able to recover their capital in time.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ben, Standing Vice Chairman of the Ward Fatherland Front Committee, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Duong Ward, said: The Farmers' Association of the ward will coordinate with relevant departments and residential groups to develop a detailed survey plan for each area, from which to advise the Party Committee and the Ward People's Committee to have a plan to build a model to implement the work of overcoming abandoned fields.

At the same time, strengthen propaganda and mobilize farmer members to promote the conversion of crop structure on ineffective rice land areas in the direction of replicating production models that have been and are having high economic efficiency; build new models suitable to the conditions, potentials and strengths of each rice field. Mobilize households without working conditions to lend or rent fields to some households with working conditions to convert crop structure towards concentrated production, applying science and technology...

It is known that from now until the end of the year, one of the economic development tasks that An Duong ward has determined to focus on is to promote the implementation of the crop restructuring plan in 2025 associated with handling abandoned land areas, guiding agricultural cooperatives and farming households to apply concentrated production models to improve productivity, efficiency, and orient the development of clean, high-tech agriculture associated with craft village development.
