At the meeting between Can Tho city leaders and tourism businesses in 2025 on October 15, Mr. Sam Long Giang - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city - said that in the first 9 months of 2025, investment promotion activities, development of service infrastructure, trade and tourism were promoted.
The retail system, consumer services, cuisine , and entertainment continue to expand. At the same time, tourism products are constantly renewed, and businesses focus on tourism promotion activities according to the tourism stimulus program "Vietnam - Go to love" of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Thereby, in the first 9 months of 2025, Can Tho city is expected to welcome more than 9.3 million visitors, including more than 4.2 million overnight visitors (more than 350,500 international visitors).
Total tourism revenue in the first 9 months of 2025 reached more than 8,000 billion VND, reaching 80% of the yearly plan. On average, tourists to Can Tho city spend nearly 860,000 VND/trip.
Although the number of domestic and international visitors to Can Tho city has increased, businesses say it is not commensurate.

Ms. Doan Mai Thanh - assistant director of Victoria Can Tho Hotel - cited that in the first 8 months of 2025, Vietnam welcomed 13.9 million international visitors, an increase of 21.7% over the same period, while the number of international visitors to Can Tho city was recorded to only account for about 1 - 1.5% of the total number of international visitors in the country.
The reason why the number of international visitors to Can Tho city is still quite modest is because the destination recognition is not appropriate. On the international tourism map, the main destinations of Vietnam are still concentrated in Hanoi, Ha Long, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc.
Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region have only appeared as a supplementary program and have not become the main highlight.
In addition, the city also has limited tourism products, so many international travel companies only operate short tours from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho or Cai Be and return, instead of extending the journey to Can Tho.
Another important reason is the disruption of direct flights to Can Tho, typically the Can Tho - Da Nang and Can Tho - Phu Quoc routes. This makes it difficult for travel agencies to build inter-regional tours and reduces the competitiveness of Can Tho on the national tourism map.
"Promote online promotion tools, including multilingual websites, regularly update information on events, destinations, and tourism products. Cooperate with online travel agents and travel bloggers in distant markets to increase destination brand recognition," Ms. Thanh suggested.
One issue that many businesses have commented on to the city is environmental sanitation, the situation of littering on rivers, canals, and streets, and the need to promptly update data, tour routes, and connect with travel and accommodation businesses... after the merger of Can Tho city with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces.
