According to reporters at traditional markets in Can Tho City, at this time, young linh fish are being sold by many traders. Unprocessed fish are sold at prices ranging from 150,000 to 230,000 VND/kg, depending on size. As for cleaned fish, the selling price is quite high, from 200,000 to 280,000 VND/kg. According to many traders, because it is the beginning of the season, the fish is sweet and delicious, so it attracts a lot of customers.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha - a trader at Tan An market (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) - said that she currently sells about 20 kg of linh fish per day on average. This fish is taken from the upstream area of Chau Doc ( An Giang province). Although the price is high, many consumers are looking to buy this specialty fish.
“Every flood season, I start importing linh fish to sell because many people like it. Young linh fish the size of chopsticks, not yet processed, cost 230,000 VND/kg, the slightly larger ones are cheaper, only 150,000 VND/kg. Most people like to eat the chopstick-sized ones because they are small, have few bones, and sweet meat,” said Ms. Ha.
According to Ms. Ha, due to high demand, from early morning, she proactively prepared and sold at a price higher than 50,000 VND/kg: "Young linh fish are very delicious but small, pre-processing takes a lot of time, so many people often choose to buy pre-cleaned. Therefore, even though it costs nearly 300,000 VND/kg, many people still accept to buy. There are days when I sit and prepare fish all morning but still do not have enough to sell."
Selling more than ten kilograms of young linh fish every day, Ms. Be Tu - a trader at Xuan Khanh market (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) - shared that at this time, linh fish is the most delicious and sweet, so many people are looking to buy it.
“I mostly import linh fish from An Giang and Dong Thap provinces. In the early days, the price of unprocessed young linh fish was 250,000 VND/kg and 300,000 VND/kg for the cleaned type. But in the past 2 weeks, there have been a lot of linh fish coming in, the price has decreased from 20,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, depending on the size, but the consumption is still high, in just one morning I sold out more than 10 kg of fish,” said Ms. Tu.
When looking to buy linh fish for family meals, Ms. Bui Thi Thu (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) prioritizes choosing small fish with soft and sweet meat: "Young linh fish is very delicious and can be processed into many dishes such as braised fish, sour soup. Everyone in my family loves to eat it. Especially, there is only one season each year, so even though the price is nearly 300,000 VND/kg, I still buy it to cook for my family."
Because her family has many members, Ms. Nguyen Thi My Hanh (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) often buys pre-cleaned products at a price of up to 280,000 VND/kg to save processing time.
“Pre-made fish is expensive but very popular. I just need to wash it before cooking. Therefore, I often order it from a familiar vendor so that it doesn’t sell out. Even though it’s pre-made, the fish is still very fresh, delicious, and sweet, worth the money,” Ms. Hanh shared.
