Speaking at a technology event in Beijing on September 5, Mr. Li said Baidu, along with several other Chinese companies, launched AI chatbots last week after being licensed for mass market release, according to Reuters.

The companies mentioned include facial recognition specialist SenseTime and AI startups such as Baichuan Intelligence Technology, Zhipu AI and MiniMax.

According to Mr. Li, Baidu's latest AI chatbot version, Ernie 3.5, has a processing speed twice as fast as the previous version. Robin Li also revealed that Baidu will launch a new version in the near future.

On September 5, China's 360 Total Security and iFlytek became the latest tech companies to release AI models to the public.

Unlike other countries, China requires companies to submit to security assessments and obtain licenses before offering their AI products for anyone to use. Chinese authorities have recently stepped up support for companies developing AI as the technology increasingly becomes a focus of competition with the US.

Hefei-based iFlytek, known for its voice recognition technology, said it is launching its "Spark" AI model, while Beijing-based 360 Total Security, known for its antivirus software, launched its "Zhinao" AI model, according to the Securities Times .
