Kohler, a brand famous for its toilets and sanitary equipment, has just introduced Dekoda, the company's first "toilet camera" capable of analyzing intestinal health through waste images.

According to CNET , Kohler describes the Dekoda as “the first health tracker with analytics,” with the ability to assess gut health, hydration levels, and detect blood in stool, a sign associated with many serious health problems. The company says the goal of the product is to help users better understand their digestive health and adjust their lifestyle accordingly.

Dekoda is designed to be attached to the toilet rim, similar to conventional sanitary accessories. The difference is that the camera system and sensors are integrated inside, facing down into the toilet bowl. Kohler claims that the device only scans waste, does not rotate in any other direction, to ensure privacy for users.

The device takes pictures of your stool and sends the data to the Dekoda app on your phone for analysis. The app tracks a variety of metrics, including shape, consistency, and frequency, and uses AI to provide insights into your gut health. Kohler says this data can help users develop habits that support a healthy digestive system and maximize performance.

Dekoda is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor so that each user can log in separately, ensuring that personal health data is not mixed up. The product uses a magnetic battery that charges via a USB-C port and can be installed easily without the need for supporting tools.

While Kohler claims the Dekoda is the first of its kind, similar products already exist. Austin-based Throne has also released the Throne One, a toilet with a built-in camera that monitors stool and water consumption. However, this device does not have a blood detection feature, and is focused on helping people with chronic bowel diseases such as Crohn's or colitis.

Experts say the use of cameras and imaging technology in healthcare is becoming more and more popular. Kohler Dekoda is a notable extension of this trend, although the idea of a “camera in the bathroom” still makes many people wary of privacy.

The Dekoda is currently available for $599 , while the accompanying app requires an annual subscription ranging from $70-$150 , depending on the service level.
